Objectives

1. Publication of revised editions of District Gazetteers and State Gazetteer in both Kannada and English.

2. Publication of revised edition of 'A Hand Book of Karnataka' in both Kannada and English.

3. Publication of a Special edition of ' A Tourism Gazetteer' one each for a thematic volume revenue division edited and published in collaboration with the State Tourism Department in 2008

4. Publication of three special volumes under ' Suvarna Karnataka' scheme.

5. Publication of a comprehensive volume on ' Flora and Fauna of Karnataka'.

6. Publication of Taluk Gazetteers of Karnataka State both in English and Kannada.

Salient Features

  • Karnataka Gazetteer Department was established during the year 1958.

  • The department has brought out all the 20 district Gazetteers in English. The publication of the newly formed seven district Gazetteers will be taken up shortly.

  • Karnataka is the first State in the country to publish the State Gazetteers in two parts in English (1982 & 1983) and three parts in Kannada (1984 to 1986).

  • Decennial supplements to the Karnataka State volume were published in 1994 (English) and 1996 (Kannada).

  • A Handbook of Karnataka both in English and Kannada was published in 1996. The revised edition was published in 2001 and again in 2005.

  • From 1992 the department has started publishing district Gazetteers in Kannada. Five district Gazetteers have so far been brought out till date. Mandya (Kannada) and Dharwad (English) district Gazetteers are also available in CD version.

  • Translated versions of two district Gazetteers into English viz. Kodagu and Dharwad, have been brought out in 1993 and 2003 respectively.

  • Under the Reprint scheme, the department has brought out eight Pre-independence volumes.

  • As part of introducing e-Governance, the department has digitized 91 volumes running to about 60,000 pages and converted them into CD version with full text search and highlighting facilities. These volumes are available in a set of 9 CDs.

  • The department has web hosted all its publications.

  • Four Kiosks have been set up in Bangalore (two), Mysore and Dharwad where all the volumes are available for browsing.
