Marine Fisheries schemes

1.      Construction of Fishing Harbors

In order to provide infrastructure facilities to off-shore/deep Sea fishing boats, construction of Malpe II stage fishing harbor taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.2160.00 lakh was completed. Construction of fishing harbor at Gangolli was taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.832.00 lakh and work is in progress. So far an expenditure of Rs.592.91 lakh has been incurred.

Extension of 60 metres wharf at Mangalore fishing harbour at a cost of Rs.75 lakh has been accorded by the State Government and work is under progress.   An expenditure of Rs.97.69 lakh has been incurred. Construction of 2nd stage fishing harbour at Karwar was taken up and an expenditure of Rs.134.80 lakhs has been incurred so far. 

2. Construction of Fish landing centers

Construction of fish landing centre at Kodibengre was taken up at a revised estimated cost of Rs.179.00 lakh and an expenditure of Rs.153.97 lakh has been incurred so far. Construction of landing centre at Hejamadikodi at an estimated cost of Rs.95.00 lakh is completed.  So far, an expenditure of Rs.89.61 lakh has been incurred.

Action has been initiated for the construction of jetty at a revised estimated cost of Rs.67.40 lakh at Belikeri in Uttara Kannada district and the work is in progress.  Government of India has accorded approval for the construction of fish landing centre at Alvekodi in Uttara Kannada district at an estimated cost of Rs.223.99 lakh. The work is yet to be started.

3. NABARD assistance under RIDF

NABARD is financing for creation of infrastructure facilities like fish landing centers, jetties, roads and bridges. Construction of 11 roads and 2 bridges at a total estimated cost of Rs. 192.51 lakh under RIDF IV and V have been completed. Under RIDF VIII, 24 roads and 5 bridges have been sanctioned out of which 16 roads and 4 bridges have been completed. Construction of five roads and one bridge is under progress. Constructions of 3 roads have been dropped. So far, NABARD has released Rs.1290.52 lakh for the above works. Under RIDF XIII NABARD has approved a sum of Rs.600 lakh for construction of "T head" jetties at Hangarakatta and Kodibengre in Udupi district.

4. Renovation of fishing harbors and landing centers

Under the scheme, 50% assistance is provided by Govt. of India for renovation of fishing harbour and landing centres. During 2005-06 a grant of Rs.10.00 lakh was released for taking up renovation of Tadri Fishing harbour and the same work was taken up during 2006-07.

5.  Motorization of Traditional Fishing Crafts

Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Motorization of Traditional Fishing Crafts was introduced in the State during the year 1987-88. Under the scheme,1/3rd of the unit cost for the purchase of outboard engines is provided as subsidy to a maximum of Rs.20, 000/- , which is equally shared by the State and Centre. The rest of the amount is borne by the beneficiaries with assistance from financial institutions. During 2006-07 an amount of Rs.9.20 lakh was released to 36 beneficiaries.

6. Subsidy for construction of Fish market:

Under this scheme, the local bodies are encouraged to construct fish markets and a subsidy of 50% of the cost not exceeding Rs. 25000 each is given.

7. Assistance for installation of life saving equipment on fishing boats

To assist the fishermen for safe navigation and to identify potential fishing grounds in the sea, subsidy to a maximum of Rs.34,000/- is provided for  purchase  of electronic equipments viz., GPS-navigator, radio-telephone, echo sounder, etc. 25% subsidy subject to a maximum of Rs.7500 each is provided for installation of life saving equipments on fishing boats.

 8. Sea ranching

Under this programme, tiger prawn seeds and seeds of other shrimps and brackish water fishes are stocked at selected areas along the sea and estuaries of the State.

9. Remission of Central excise duty on HSD used by mechanized fishing boats:

Under this scheme provision has been made for remission of central excise duty on diesel used by mechanised fishing boats.  This is a central sector scheme and the entire amount is borne by the Government of India. Central excise duty of Rs.1.50 is exempted per litre of diesel. Every year about 2500 boats receive the benefit under this scheme.
